Printed page 224 · Umm Habibah marries the Messenger after Ibn Jahsh’s death

The phrase “fully sighted” refers to opening one’s eyes; a puppy is said to blink when it is trying to see. Ibn Ishaq said: After ‘Ubayd Allah ibn Jahsh died, the Messenger of Allah married his wife Umm Habibah bint Abi Sufyan ibn Harb. Muhammad ibn ‘Ali ibn Husayn told me that the Messenger sent ‘Amr ibn Umayyah al-Damri to the Negus to propose to her on his behalf. The Negus arranged the marriage and gave her a dowry of four hundred dinars on behalf of the Messenger. Muhammad ibn ‘Ali said: We believe ‘Abd al-Malik ibn Marwan fixed women’s dowries at four hundred dinars on that precedent. Khalid ibn Sa‘id ibn al-‘As acted as the Messenger’s marriage agent.
