Read the corresponding Arabic sectionIbn Hisham said: Al-Musayyib ibn Hazn ibn Abi Wahb ibn ‘Amr ibn ‘A’idh ibn ‘Imran ibn Makhzum. The manuscripts differ on whether the conjunction “and” precedes the name.
[1] The conjunction is an addition in recension A. [2] Iraqis pronounce al-Musayyib with a fatḥah on the ya; people of Medina pronounce it with a kasrah. His son Sa‘id reportedly said, “May Allah cause to be lost whoever changes my father’s name.” Qadi ‘Iyad and Ibn al-Madini also record the kasrah. [3] Sa‘id ibn al-Musayyib said that the Prophet wished to change his grandfather’s name to Sahl, but he refused, saying, “I will not change a name my father gave me.” “That hardship remained among us.” See lexicons under ḥ-z-n.
