Read the corresponding Arabic sectionIbn Ishaq said: When Abd al-Muttalib ibn Hashim died, al-‘Abbas ibn Abd al-Muttalib took charge after him of Zamzam and providing water to the pilgrims. At that time he was the youngest of his brothers. The source text continues beyond the end of printed page 178; the remaining wording is not supplied here.
[6] This is an addition from recension A. [7] Recension A reads “over it”; other copies read “over them,” which the editor considers a corruption.
The custodianship remained with him until Islam came, and it was still in his hands. The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, confirmed his continued responsibility as it had been exercised before. It then passed to the family of al-‘Abbas, who administered it, and remained with them up to that day.
[1] The words “up to this day” are an addition found in recension A.
